Michael Woo was the first Asian American and the first trained urban planner elected to the Los Angeles City Council. He gave up his Council seat in 1993 to enter the race for Mayor of Los Angeles, ultimately receiving 46 percent of the citywide vote. At USC Woo teaches urban planning and at UCLA he is teaching a new course on "China's Urban Sustainability Challenges."

He chairs the national board of Smart Growth America, the governing board of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, and the nonprofit board which runs the Hollywood Farmers Market. Mayor Villaraigosa appointed Woo to serve on the L.A. City Planning Commission, where he is helping to draft new land use and transportation policies to promote more sustainable future development.
