Los Angeles, CA – As of January 3rd, 2020, Kim Yamasaki has formally resigned from her position as Executive Director of CAUSE. The decision was personal and came from her desire to lean into her entrepreneurial spirit to start a social impact business with a colleague.
Kim first became involved with CAUSE in 2013 when she was a student intern through the CAUSE Leadership Academy summer internship program. Her passion to serve the Asian Pacific American community led to her being recruited to help coordinate the program the following summer, and to the position of Executive Director soon after. CAUSE staff and board members are extremely grateful for Kim’s leadership for the past five and a half years. From streamlined/mission-aligned programming to bolstering and elevating the organizational brand — CAUSE has made tremendous strides under her direction. CAUSE staff intend to continue to build upon Kim’s vision of sustainability, collaboration, and innovation and wish her the best in exploring her full potential beyond her role at CAUSE.
“I will always be thankful to CAUSE, the Board of Directors, especially our Board Chair Charlie Woo, our team of staff, volunteers, and the countless supporters in the community. I grew up in the community and the community raised me. It was an honor and privilege to give back to those same communities,” said Kim Yamasaki, outgoing CAUSE Executive Director.
“While we are saddened by her departure, we always take great pride to see young leaders from the CAUSE family spreading their wings to pursue their passions outside the organization. I will miss working side by side with her as I have for the past five and a half years. She was an amazing colleague who shared my vision and passion for CAUSE,” said Charlie Woo, CAUSE Board Chair.
The CAUSE Board of Directors has put together a search committee to actively recruit a new Executive Director over the next few months. During this time, Richard Leong, previously CAUSE Director of Programs & Strategic Innovation, will be acting as the Interim Executive Director. Kim Yamasaki will also be involved in the transition process as an organization consultant on a contractual basis.
CAUSE has always been rooted in our Leadership Development programs and plans to continue to ensure their ongoing development and execution in 2020 and beyond. CAUSE staff are committed to upholding our values of sustainability, collaboration, and innovation while ensuring our program participants receive the necessary knowledge, access, and network to enhance their growth as leaders.

Los Angeles, CA – October 10, 2018 – CAUSE proudly congratulates our Board of Directors Legal Counsel Kenneth Lee for his nomination by President Donald J. Trump to serve as a Circuit Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Kenneth Lee is a partner in the Los Angeles, California, office of Jenner & Block LLP, where his practice focuses on appellate litigation and internal investigations, and where he serves on the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee. He has briefed and argued appeals in multiple federal courts of appeals, including the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Second, Fifth, and Ninth Circuits. He also maintains an active pro bono practice, providing free legal representation to indigent and incarcerated clients. Prior to joining Jenner & Block, Mr. Lee served as Associate Counsel to President George W. Bush and as an associate with Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Upon graduation from law school, Mr. Lee clerked for Judge Emilio M. Garza of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Mr. Lee received his A.B. from Cornell University, summa cum laude, and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School.

In 2007, Mr. Hsu received The California Lawyer’s Angel Award for outstanding pro bono service.

2018 APA-Facing Gubernatorial Debate Secures 5 Leading Candidates
Pasadena, CA – March 26, 2018 – Center for Asian Americans United for Self-Empowerment (CAUSE) has partnered with over 70+ community organizations and 15+ press agencies in the Asian Pacific American (APA) community to host the first ever APA facing-Gubernatorial Debate on Friday, April 27, 2018, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM (PST). Admission to the debate is free and open to the public at the Sexson Auditorium of Pasadena City College (1570 East Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, CA 91106). To RSVP, please click here.
“The first ever APA-Facing Gubernatorial Debate will be historical for the state of California,” said Kim Yamasaki, Executive Director of CAUSE. “This will be an opportunity for our gubernatorial candidates to share their stance on our community’s needs and issues.”
The selection criteria for candidates to participate in the 2018 APA-Facing Gubernatorial Debate was based on the data results from extensive polling conducted at the time of determination.

Candidate Gavin Newsom, CA State Lieutenant Governor has declined to attend the event. Representatives from Newsom’s campaign team officially responded as follows, “Unfortunately based on the large number of debate requests and competing demands for the Lieutenant Governor’s time, we will be unable to attend. For context, by the end of February, we will have already completed seven candidate debates and forums…”
The response drew concern from leaders within the APA community. “The APA community will no longer be associated with being soft-spoken,” said Charlie Woo, Chair of CAUSE. “…we are a community that will not be ignored. Our gubernatorial candidates need to treat us with the same respect as all other communities.”
Paul Song, President of Physicians for a National Health Program California, also chimed in and encouraged candidates to take APA voters seriously. Understanding that the debate has the ability to impact the decision-making process of APA voters, Song emphasized, “We are not a monolithic group, but rather politically diverse and independent minded. Therefore we encourage all gubernatorial candidates not to dismiss this wonderful opportunity and to readily participate in the [debate]. It is very important for each candidate to share their visions, goals, and to speak directly to an important constituency.”
Today, APA communities are the fastest growing ethnic group across the nation. Additionally, more than one-third (5.7 million) of the United States’ APA population resides in California. California is also home to the largest number of APA-owned businesses (32% of the total in the nation) and has a consumer market of $172 billion. With the APA population comprising nearly 15% of California’s electorate, the APA community could potentially decide the outcome of the 2018 elections.
“… Candidates and elected officials alike must address the growing AAPI community to succeed here, which is why the first AAPI-focused Gubernatorial Debate hosted by CAUSE is so important,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, Founder and Director of AAPI Data. “By showing up, candidates demonstrate their commitment to addressing issues facing the AAPI community, and that they understand the power of our vote.”
The debate will be held in front of a live audience as well as streamed for broadcast by media outlets with English and Asian language programming.

Pasadena, CA – March 23, 2018 – Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE) will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the L.A. Hotel Downtown (333 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90071).

The CAUSE Annual Gala is the premier APA event for those interested in politics and community. It boasts the largest attendance of APA elected officials and is a celebration of those striving to make an impact in our community. More than 100 APA federal, state and local officials from all over California will be in attendance. The gala also serves as the largest fundraiser of the year for CAUSE. Funds raised help sustain our many programs and services, which include voter outreach, training, and education and leadership development programs. Inspirational Leadership Award
Los Angeles Councilmember David Ryu
Los Angeles City Councilmember David E. Ryu represented the 4th council district which includes the neighborhoods of Sherman Oaks, Toluca Lake, Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Miracle Mile, Hancock Park, Windsor Square, Larchmont and a portion of Koreatown.
Ryu studied economics at UCLA; Public Policy and Administration at Rutgers; won a prestigious United Nations graduate internship; and was a Netkal Fellow at USC’s School of Social Work.
As Senior Deputy to Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne Burke, he worked for years on issues like public health, housing, children and family services, transportation and senior services. He helped oversee the County budget and worked for a time as a Special Investigator for the Auditor-Controller, rooting out waste and fraudulent expenditures.
Ryu returned to the non-profit world and served as Director of Development and Public Affairs at one of Los Angeles’s largest non-profit health care providers: Kedren Acute Psychiatric Hospital and Community Health Center.
On July 1st, 2015 Ryu became the first Korean American to serve on the LA City Council and only the second Asian American.
“The work that CAUSE does to empower leadership and organize the API community is remarkable, effective and important,” Councilmember Ryu said. “I am so honored to receive this award, and to work with CAUSE on bringing a new generation of leadership to the fore, inspiring the voices of our community, and ensuring that Asian-Americans remain a key part of the Los Angeles story.”

Join us as we welcome the 2017 class of Veterans Initiative fellows!
The kickoff will feature keynote speaker, The Honorable Jay Chen of the Mt. San Antonio College Board of Trustees & Lieutenant of the US Naval Reserve.
The CAUSE Veterans Initiative is a fellowship and civic leadership program for veterans and reservists who are seeking community leadership roles outside of the military. The Veterans Initiative program was specifically designed for veterans interested in increasing the accessibility and awareness of available veterans resources as well as learning how to effectively advocate on behalf of Asian Pacific American (APA) veterans issues. In this program, participants are provided with mentors, professional development opportunities, and issue/policy briefings.
During this program, participants will not only gain insight on issues related to the veteran community and how to provide assistance, but will also be exposed to opportunities for individual professional development. Exclusive access to a network of prominent mentors and enhanced political awareness are a few notable examples.

The CAUSE Leadership Academy Graduation celebrates the 2017 Leadership Academy class’ completion of a rigorous nine-week internship program. Join elected officials, community leaders, local press, and families to congratulate the leaders of tomorrow!
The graduation will feature keynote speaker, Congressmember Judy Chu of the 27th Congressional District of California and Master of Ceremonies Jack Song, Marketing & Communications Lead at LimeBike and an alumni of the CAUSE Leadership Academy (Class of 2001).
Since its inception in 1991, the CAUSE Leadership Academy develops a pipeline of leadership for the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. The program prepares its participants to be leaders at the forefront of the democratic process through learning the importance of civic engagement and political participation. Graduates of this program have gone on to run for political office and have become leaders in politics, business, and nonprofits.
The CAUSE Leadership Academy offers opportunities for students to gain firsthand experience in politics through constituent services, community organizing, community relations, and legislative research. Interns are required to participate in civic leadership workshops, work full time in a political office, attend an APA internship conference in Sacramento, and complete a group voter engagement project.

CAUSE Hosts the 2017 Women in Power Annual Leadership Conference
Pasadena, CA – July 21, 2017 – Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE) will host the 2017 Women in Power Annual Leadership Conference on Friday, July 21, 2017 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel (506 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90071), from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with a network reception to follow from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
The Women in Power (WIP) program aims to create opportunities for candid discussion regarding issues that women leaders face and to explore strategies for overcoming them. The WIP annual conference and networking programs help foster a community built on leadership, inspiration, and mentorship, empowering women to achieve their full leadership potential.
The program also serves as a recruitment tool to be able to ensure we are engaging with women of all different industries and ensuring that they are encouraged to apply and go through our other pipeline building and leadership development programming efforts such as the Leadership Academy and the Political Institute.
We are delighted to recognize the following honorees with the 2017 Women in Power Changemaker Award:
The Honorable Maria Contreras-Sweet
24th Administrator of the US Small Business Administration
Maria Contreras-Sweet is the 24th Administrator of the US Small Business Administration (SBA) and was a member of President Obama’s cabinet. As a business leader, California state cabinet official, and entrepreneur, Contreras-Sweet’s achievements in bringing efficiencies and modernization to large scale organizations have earned her international acclaim. Her drive to bring SBA into the digital age, and expand into broader domestic and global markets, has yielded record results in lending and contracting for small businesses. Contreras-Sweet is a founding director of The California Endowment, a $3 billion foundation dedicated to improving the health status of Californians. She served on the boards of Blue Cross of California and numerous other nonprofit organizations.
Ming Chen Hsu
Director at the JT Tai & Company Foundation and Former FMC Commissioner
Ming Chen Hsu has extensive experience in international trade and commerce in both the public and private sectors. She was appointed as a Commissioner of the Federal Maritime Commission by former President George HW Bush and was confirmed by the United States Senate in 1990. She served on the commission for ten years. Hsu was actively involved in negotiations with the Chinese Ministry of Communications, which led to the US-China Maritime Bilateral Agreement signed by President George W. Bush and Premier Wen Jiabao in Washington in 2004. She’s the recipient of awards including the US Maritime Medal of Freedom, the Woman of Year Award from the Asian-American Professional Women’s Association, and George Washington University’s Alumni Achievement Award.

CAUSE Welcomes Leadership Academy Class of 2017
Pasadena, CA – June 23, 2017 – Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE) will host the 2017 Leadership Academy Kickoff Press Conference and Reception on Friday, June 23, 2017 at the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce (350 S. Bixel Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017), from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Through this program, CAUSE will welcome and introduce the 2017 Leadership Academy Cohort. Program participants will share their stories and passion in serving the community. The Honorable Mike Eng of the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees will serve as the keynote speaker for the program.
Since its inception in 1991, the CAUSE Leadership Academy develops a pipeline of leadership for the Asian Pacific American (APA) community. The program prepares its participants to be leaders at the forefront of the democratic process through learning the importance of civic engagement and political participation. Graduates of this program have gone on to run for political office and have become leaders in politics, business, and nonprofits.
This year, CAUSE received a record number of applications from elite students across the nation. Participants went through a rigorous and comprehensive reviewing process. Decisions are made based on academic and personal excellence, as well as demonstrated leadership capabilities in extracurricular activities.
The CAUSE Leadership Academy offers opportunities for students to gain firsthand experience in politics through constituent services, community organizing, community relations, and legislative research.

Pasadena, CA – February 27, 2017 – Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE) will be celebrating its 24th Anniversary on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at the L.A. Hotel Downtown (333 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90071). This year’s theme is “Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders.” As our country enters a new era of leadership, it is more important than ever to empower the future leaders and change-makers of the Asian Pacific American (APA) community.

The CAUSE Annual Gala is the premier APA event for those interested in politics and community. It boasts the largest attendance of APA elected officials and is a celebration of those striving to make an impact in our community. More than 100 APA federal, state and local officials from all
over California will be in attendance. The gala also serves as the largest fundraiser of the year for CAUSE. Funds raised help sustain our many programs and services, which include voter outreach, training, and education and leadership development programs. Our programs have proven to be successful in encouraging increased civic engagement and political leadership in the Greater Los Angeles area and beyond.
Additionally, 500 guests are expected to attend this year— all of whom are dedicated to elevating the APA community. We are delighted to recognize the following honorees for their audacity and resolve to stand as leaders for the APA community:
Partners in Public Service Award
The Hon. Anthony Rendon, 70th
Speaker of the California State Assembly and
Annie V. Lam, Principal, Lam Consulting Group
Speaker Rendon and Ms. Lam have exemplified the importance cross-sector partnership in civic leadership. Their commitment to public service in government and the nonprofit industry is commendable. Speaker Rendon and Ms. Lam’s long-standing support for the APA community includes supporting CAUSE’s past programs and helping us to inspire the next generation of civic and public service leaders.
Speaker Rendon was elected to the California State Assembly in 2012 and was sworn-in as the 70th Speaker of the Assembly in 2016. He represents the 63rd California Assembly District, which includes Bell, Cudahy, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Lynwood, Maywood, Paramount, South Gate and a northern portion of Long Beach.
Ms. Lam specializes in governmental affairs, organizational development, and nonprofit management. Ms. Lam serves as the executive director for four nonprofits with complementary missions: the Asian Union Election Committee Education Fund (AUECEF), the League of California Cities Asian Pacific Islander (API) Caucus, the League of California Cities Women’s Caucus, and the California Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus Institute.

After serving five years on the Board of Directors, Mr. Kobara was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the California Community Foundation in 2008. For more than 40 years, Mr. Kobara has been leading and managing diverse and complex non-profit and for-profit organizations, including CK12 Foundation, OnlineLearning.net, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles. More than anything, Mr. Kobara considers himself an educator and teacher. He has taught hundreds of classes and workshops for undergraduate and graduate students, including participants in CAUSE’s leadership development programs for many years.

Prior to his current role, Pat managed EY’s Greater Los Angeles Audit practice and served as industry leader for the Media & Entertainment and Japanese Business Services practices. For many years, Mr. Niemann and EY have been actively involved in the Los Angeles community and dedicated to empowering and giving back specifically to the APA community.
