Matthew Yuan-Ching Lin, MD, a board certified orthopaedic surgeon, is the founder and current President of Pacific Orthopaedic Medical Group, Inc. Dr. Lin has been dedicated to serving the patients of the Greater San Gabriel Valley for the past 28 years.
In March 2001, he was elected to the San Marino City Council. Dr. Lin made history by being the first Asian American to ever serve on the San Marino City Council and as Mayor since the Council’s inception, 92 years ago. Presently, Dr. Lin serves as Mayor of the City of San Marino. He also serves as the President of Chinese American Elected Officials since March 2005.
Dr. Lin was born and raised in Chi-Chi, A small village in the central part of Taiwan. He attended Taipei Medical College in Taiwan where he completed his medical training and earned his medical degree. In addition to achieving a medical degree at Taipei College, his varied interests included participation in many extracurricular activities and sports. Dr. Lin served as captain of the judo team for three years and was also part of the rugby and soccer teams, both of which ranked number one in the medical school leagues of Taiwan.
Dr. Lin came to the United States in 1973. He completed his Orthopaedic residency and fellowship training at Johns Hopkins University and Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Lin started his private practice in orthopaedic surgery by founding Pacific Orthopaedic Medical Group, Inc. (POMG) in the Alhambra, Monterey Park and San Gabriel areas 27 years ago. POMG now consists of eight board certified orthopaedic surgeons, three physician assistants and four physical and occupational therapists.
Dr. Lin has held many leadership positions in the Southern California community. He has served as the President of the Los Angeles County Medical Association – San Gabriel District, President of the Taiwan Medical Society, and a member of the Board of Directors of Garfield Medical Center, Alhambra Hospital, and Pacific Independent Physician Association.
Dr. Lin has also served as the Chief of Staff at Garfield Medical Center in 1989 and 1990 as well as the Vice Chief of Staff, Chief of Surgery and Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery in hospitals throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
Always committed to teaching and education, Dr. Lin has served on the clinical faculty of the University of Southern California and Western University of Health Sciences. Dr. Lin’s dedication to the community is not limited to the healthcare field. Dr. Lin’s past community involvement includes working with the Taiwan Center, the Pasadena Symphony, the San Marino School Foundation and the Pacific Asia Museum. Dr. Lin has also been the head soccer coach for AYSC and the Judo coach for the San Marino Recreation Department.
Among his services to the community, Dr. Lin participated in earthquake rescue missions to Taiwan in September 1999 and El Salvador in January 2001. Most recently, Dr. Lin was chosen to lead a tsunami medic al relief team to Sri Lanka. Dr. Lin and a team consisting of 6 physicians and 3 nurses completed an organized relief effort that included setting up medical clinics and performing emergency surgery in Hamlantota, Sri Lanka – an area that was devastated by the tsunami of December 26, 2004.
