Among the early appointments announced by President-elect Obama is Pete Rouse to the post of Senior Advisor to the President. Rouse, whose mother was Japanese and whose father is white, had been Obama’s Senate chief of staff and more recently co-chair of the Obama-Biden transition team.

Rouse had been chief of staff of Senate majority leader Tom Daschle for two decades. He was known as “the 101st Senator” because of his skills and knowledge. Rouse was recruited by the newly elected Obama to run his Senate office when Daschle was defeated in 2004. Rouse was responsible for a memo, “The Strategic Plan”, to help Obama navigate the Senate politics and yet remain an outsider.

Congresswoman Jane Harmon, who represents the Los Angeles South Bay area, has been mentioned as a leading candidate for several key positions in the Obama administration, including CIA director and secretary of homeland security. Such an appointment would create a vacancy in her 36th Congressional District and Assemblyman Ted Lieu would most likely be the top contender in a special election. Lieu's potential campaign for Congress would create great excitement in the APA community in California.

Bobby Jindal, the Indian-American Governor of Louisiana, is scheduled to make the keynote speech at a high-profile event for a conservative Christian organization, Iowa Family Policy Center, in Des Moines on November 22. This is the first visit to Iowa by the 37-year-old Republican rising star.

Governor Jindal, once considered as a possible running mate for McCain, was widely praised for skipping a prime time speaking role at the Republican Convention in order to deal with Huricane Gustav at home. He has been considered by many as future of the Republican Party.

Iowa Caucus is the first contest of the presidential primaries and the next caucus is still 38 months away. Many political observers believe this visit signals his interest in the 2012 pesidential race.
