ALBERT Y. MURATSUCHI

TRUSTEE, TORRANCE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION

Take 10 | Full biography

  1. 1. How do we get more Asian Pacific Americans (APAs) to become more civically and politically involved?

As a Torrance school board member, I see many APA kids who are very active in student government and service organizations.  They are actively involved because, one, they have fun, two, they get to be with their friends, and three, they know that it looks good on their college applications.
Adults are not that much different from the kids.  Organizations like CAUSE can provide opportunities, support, and a network of friends to help make civic and political involvement rewarding and even fun.

2. What is your dream job?
A baseball player who makes political statements in his postgame interview after hitting the game-winning home run.  And still gets the Nike contract.

3. What was your childhood ambition?
Baseball player

4. What is the biggest challenge facing APAs in politics today?
Apathy in the APA community

5. What one law would you change if you could?
Give a great public education and true equal opportunity to every child in America

6. What was your first job?
I did construction jobs in high school

7. What one question would you most like to have answered?
The meaning of life

8. What is your favorite word/sound?
Ganbare!  That’s Japanese for “persevere,” or “go for it.”

9. What was the last book you read?
Speaking of Faith, by Krista Tippett

10. Who/what inspires you?
People who devote their lives to a righteous cause
