California is looking for applicants to serve on the statewide Citizens Redistricting Commission (CRC) who will be tasked with drawing the legislative and Congressional election districts in 2021 for the next decade.
California is one of few states in the nation where a group of citizens drafts and adopts state legislative and Congressional maps with public input. This is the second redistricting cycle with the CRC in California, and we're looking to encourage more AAPI qualified candidates to apply. The current applicant pool is not fully representative of California's diversity! The application deadline to serve as a 2020 Commissioner is coming up on August 9th, 2019.
Common Cause is hosting several webinars to discuss the CRC's important role in redrawing district lines and why we need a diverse commission – On July 27 and August 8, we will feature the AA and PI commissioners who drew the 2011 lines. As a result of their service, the first Asian American Voting Rights districts in California were drawn.
