Long Beach, CA – On February 16, 2019, CAUSE worked with Rubi Martinez, Deputy Press Secretary at NextGen America, to give a presentation on “Reading Social Media Critically" at the Arsalyn Youth Conference. Each year, CAUSE participates by providing a presentation to high school students who are passionate about being involved in civic and political engagement.
Rubi Martinez is a communications professional and currently the Deputy Press Secretary at NextGen America. With close to 10-years of experience working in media and politics, she has proven success in developing, managing, and implementing strategies to highlight and catalyze broader impact utilizing traditional and digital media channels.
During her presentation on “Reading Social Media Critically", Rubi emphasized the importance of questioning news posts and checking sources to void spreading misinformation. She invited the students to identify and distinguish the trends that tend to indicate fake news sources and stories.
After the presentation, she went around the room answering specific questions from students.
