Los Angeles, CA – On Saturday, June 6th, CAUSE hosted the fifth session of the 2020 Leadership Institute. The session was hosted online via video conferencing in adherence to COVID-19 safety guidelines and in consideration of the health and wellness of all participants.

The session began with a leadership feature on Christine Tran, Executive Director of the LA Food Policy Council. During her “Finding Joy in My Career Journey” presentation, Christine shared pivotal experiences in her community work and engaged in a Q & A with the cohort. Christine also shared her quote, “Understand myself and the world we live in,” with the cohort and explained how it guides her to lead with empathy.

One fellow pointed out how effective Christine’s motto is by recognizing that she “situates her leadership development to the social-political context of her upbringing and understands her identity in relation to other communities of color.“

The day closed with fellows exploring “Collaborating for Collective Impact” facilitated by Nancy Yap, Vice President of Development at Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP). Nancy gave the fellows time to name the challenges they face in different spaces and consider solutions forward together. This approach was well-received and one fellow expressed appreciation that "Nancy Yap created opportunities for cohort members to collaborate together."

The CAUSE Leadership Institute (CLI) is a community leadership and advocacy training certificate program for high-potential professionals with seasoned leadership experience and a passion for serving the needs of the APA community in California. Participants complete the program armed with the skills and connections vital to advocate for the APA community. Graduates of this program have gone on to change the civic landscape in the region through elected office and leadership roles in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Our program is highly selective and each member of our cohort is selected based on their leadership abilities, public service, and community involvement. Program fellows are identified by leading elected officials, select nonprofit partner organizations, CAUSE Board Members, and CAUSE Alumni.
