By Zackary Yen, 2025 CLA Intern
Every year, hundreds of guests come to support CAUSE by attending their annual Summer Soiree. During this huge event, the CAUSE interns have been tasked with running a Mock Campaign, where two CAUSE interns run for a hypothetical seat for California Assembly District 49. This year, CLA Interns Esther and Imani are the candidates, and I have the privilege of serving as the Outreach and Field Director for Team Link with Lian.
In this role, my priority has been building meaningful connections between our campaign and the people of AD-49. That has meant going beyond campaign talking points—showing up in neighborhoods, attending community events, and listening to what matters most to residents.
At the Alhambra Farmer’s Market, my campaign team had the opportunity to hear what small businesses wanted to see from the government. Many spoke about rising costs, the uncertainty of the economy, and the need for immigration policies that support their ability to serve their customers and hire workers. These conversations revealed how important it is to hear concerns directly from the community. At both the El Monte and San Gabriel City Hall Meetings, I was able to witness how community voices are translated into action. As I watched public comments, where community members are able to voice their opinions on certain policies, and debates between city councilmembers, I witnessed how leadership at the local level is a bridge between community concerns and real-world solutions.
These past few weeks have shown me that leadership begins with meeting the community where they are—listening to their stories, understanding their challenges, and working alongside them to find solutions to large, complex issues. As the CAUSE Summer Soiree approaches, I look forward to having the opportunity to connect with leaders and advocates to share what I have learned about my community during my CLA internship.
