Blog 2: Finding Community in Uncertain Times

By Paolo Estrella, 2025 CLA Intern

Building on my last blog, I’ve come to realize that the common thread tying together all of our networking events, social gatherings, and thoughtful conversations has been a deepening sense of community. Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the chance to participate in events that reminded me just how powerful and grounding that theme can be, especially during turbulent times.

One standout experience was attending a Pride Month market in Echo Park on June 21st. What struck me most was the contrast between the tense political atmosphere, marked by the deployment of the National Guard and Marines, and the laid back energy of the event itself. Despite everything happening politically, our cohort was able to immerse ourselves in the rich culture of Los Angeles. The diversity of food, people, and stories felt refreshing. As someone who studies in Washington D.C., I don’t often see that same kind of cultural variety. Immersing myself in the LA community was a beautiful reminder of the spirit people bring to public spaces regardless of circumstance.

Another event that resonated with me was my city’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration. The yearly event is a full-scale community gathering with performers, vendors, local organizations, and a meaningful program. I’ve attended this event more often than not but this time being able to help my friends who organize it made me feel even more connected. It reminded me why I’m passionate about civic engagement.

In both cases, what mattered most wasn’t just the fun or spectacle. It was the feeling of belonging. These moments have shown me the kinds of communities I want to uplift when I have more tools and resources available.

I’m incredibly grateful to have these opportunities through the CLA program and in my personal life. Getting to better understand the circumstances of the communities important to me has been a gift, and I’m excited to continue growing alongside them.
