Blog 5: A Three Act Guide to Hosting a Soiree

By Paolo Estrella, 2025 CLA Intern

Act One: Setting the Stage
The moment I arrived, I hit the ground running. I’ve always believed a great event starts with great preparation, so I threw myself into the work which included spreading tablecloths, lighting, spilling, and eventually extinguishing candles, lugging heavy bags of sand, and carrying trays of snacks down from the air conditioned rooms to the dry heat outside for guests. Every small detail mattered, and as the venue came together, I as well as everyone else could feel the excitement building.

Act Two: Working the Room
Once Soiree began, my focus shifted. This was my moment to connect with people, and I quickly found my rhythm; share Esther’s campaign pitch, then slip into conversation to learn about their stories and passions. It wasn’t just about getting votes (though it helped); it was about building genuine connections with leaders and community members who care about the same issues I do.
Speeches filled the courtyard from inspiring AAPI leaders like Judy Chu and Jessica Caloza. I even received a personal shout-out from my assembly member, which genuinely meant the world to me. Still, the competition wasn’t over, and with the uncertainty of the results hanging over me, I kept my nerves in check by staying engaged and talking with as many people as I could.

Act Three: The Results and the Afterglow
When the time came to announce the winner, my heart was racing. Hearing Esther’s name called as the winner campaign filled me with gratitude more than anything else. Among others, it filled me with gratitude for my incredible team, whose hard work powered our effort, and for the entire cohort, who kept the competition fierce yet cordial.
Like all good nights, Soiree eventually wrapped up. We packed away the decorations, said our goodbyes to past cohort members and loved ones, and ended the night together at IHOP, sharing stories and eventually t-water. Each act of the evening gave me something valuable to take away, but together they created a night I know I’ll remember vividly as a source of my passion and drive.
