Blog 6: Where the Ground Falls Away

As my time with CAUSE and my host office comes to an end, I am filled with immense gratitude for the experiences and relationships I made during this internship. This has been such a rewarding and informative opportunity that expanded my horizons and expectations of what is possible.

CAUSE

I am deeply grateful for the relationships I forged through this program. From engaging with inspiring guest speakers each week to the sense of unity I felt in Sacramento, I have been continually motivated and supported. Being surrounded by a cohort of people who share my values and aspirations has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this experience. Some of my favorite memories include attending community events together, going on lunch time matcha runs, and hopping on calls to play Roblox—moments that fostered a genuine camaraderie and made this journey unforgettable.

Host Office

Time flew by during my internship in Supervisor Solis’ office. From the very first day, the team welcomed me as part of the staff, keeping me informed and involved in ongoing projects. I drafted memos, talking points, and briefings on immigration, affordable housing, and homelessness, contributing directly to shaping the office’s policy and communications work. At the San Gabriel Valley district office, I engaged with constituents, providing Chinese translation to help ensure their voices were heard and their needs addressed. These experiences not only strengthened my writing and communication skills but also deepened my understanding of how local government serves its community.

For Future Applicants

If you told me in the beginning of my senior year that I would be involved in government and politics, I would not have believed you. I had no prior experience or interest in politics and my trajectory in college also reflected that. I applied to this program on a whim, believing that I would not get in. But, the universe works in mysterious ways, and somehow, I am here. As easy as it is to say this now that I am on the other side, please do not be discouraged or intimidated by the application process and requirements. I urge you to apply and push yourself to be in spaces even if you do not feel like you are qualified or belong. You may not see it yet, but there is so much that each individual brings to the table. As corny as it sounds, discomfort is a sign of growth, and I have definitely learned and grown a lot in these 9 weeks. To any fellow FGLI students reading this, know that you are not alone and that there are so many people in this world, including myself, who are rooting for you and willing to help. Take a leap of faith.
