My first two weeks with the CAUSE Leadership Academy and Assemblymember Sade Elhawary’s district office have been incredibly rewarding. This is such a new experience for me. I have gotten used to working at the national level, so stepping into the world of local government has been both refreshing and grounding. I’m beginning to see and understand how local systems operate, and this insight is helping guide my thinking about where I want to go in my future career. It’s also been a confidence-building space, one where I feel like I’m learning while also contributing.
From day one, I noticed how intentional and collaborative the office environment is. The staff are meticulous, and they all work with purpose. It’s clear that they care deeply about serving the community and making sure the work is being handled with care and efficiency. The District team has been intentional and detail-oriented. Everyone knows their role, and there is a clear emphasis on collaboration and accountability. It’s been inspiring to participate in the work and witness how local offices operate on the ground, responding to community needs in real time. This Friday, I got to sit in on conversations around the structure of LA County government and how it compares to state and federal systems. It reminded me how critical local governance is and how it truly shapes people’s daily lives. Understanding those differences is something I know will shape how I approach policy work moving forward.
Meeting staff from various Los Angeles County offices, particularly those involved in Measure G’s “Now What” efforts, was a highlight. I’m grateful for the opportunity to build relationships and learn from those doing the work day in and day out. I’m confident this summer will continue to be a time of growth, connection, and clarity for me.
