By Sarah Park, 2025 CLA Intern
Through the Capitol Summit, I was able to see how the Assembly members worked together to get bills passed. I was shocked at the speed at which the members voted. Throughout this trip, I was able to meet amazing individuals like Assemblymember Fong, Senator Perez, Assemblymember Caloza, and more. Observing how they discuss and vote on legislation made me realize the importance of being actively engaged in politics. Speaking with your representatives is a powerful way to voice your concerns and opinions
I was also able to meet amazing staff and interns during our mixer with Asian Pacific American Public Affairs (APAPA) and Asian Pacific Islander Capital Association (APICA). We were able to talk about the different things we experienced working at the district office and in Sacramento. Not only was it a great opportunity to meet with other passionate people but, it was a great way to learn about the diverse experiences the interns had from all the organizations.
Although the trip was short, we learned so much by witnessing things firsthand. Whether it was the process of getting legislation passed or the different roles, such as legislative aide or director. This experience helped me fully understand the collective efforts of the people working behind the scenes to move legislation forward. It also sparked my interest in becoming a legislative aide, as I’m passionate about policy and want to help ensure that my community’s voices are heard in the policymaking process.
The Capitol Summit trip was by far the most informative and exciting experience I’ve had. I got to speak with and learn from so many passionate, experienced individuals. All in all, I would love the opportunity to intern in Sacramento. After seeing the fast-paced lifestyle, I think I would thrive in that environment and enjoy the challenge.
