Blog 3: Sacramento Capitol Summit Reflection

By Stephanie Ahorro, 2025 CLA Intern

My brief time in Sacramento from Thursday to Friday felt quick, yet incredibly fulfilling. As I reflect on the moments I experienced, one thing is clear: I’m leaving with a deeper understanding of government and a renewed sense of purpose. While in Sacramento, I was surrounded by fellows, policy enthusiasts, and had the incredible opportunity to meet my Assemblymember, Sade Elhawary. These experiences were both eye-opening and affirming. I realized how much I truly enjoy the world of government—both at the state and local levels. Although I’m grateful to be working at the state level, I’ve cultivated a newfound passion for local government, thanks to CAUSE. It’s comforting to know that Sacramento will always be there—a place I can return to, grow in, and contribute to when the time is right. But for now, my heart is rooted in Southern California.

I’ve also come to understand that service doesn’t have to begin with a seat in the Capitol. It starts in our neighborhoods, in conversations with our peers, and in consistently showing up for one another. I’m deeply driven to serve my local community—my friends, classmates, and neighbors. Whether through advocacy, organizing, or simply listening, I feel confident in the work I want to do right now.

This trip reminded me that leadership isn’t just about proximity to power—it’s about staying grounded and connected to the people. While Sacramento inspired me, Southern California—especially Los Angeles—grounds me. I’m excited for what’s ahead and even more grateful for the clarity this experience has given me. I carry this inspiration forward with pride, knowing that meaningful change begins at home. And right now, there’s no place I’d rather be doing this work than in the community that raised me.
